There is an old story, once commonly told, about a young man named Pyrrho. Pyrrho held that a person can never truly know if one action is wiser than another. No matter how lucid a situation seemed, Pyrrho refused to admit that he knew the best course of action to take. One day Pyrrho was walking along the road on his way to his philosophy seminar, when he saw his philosophy professor stuck in a ditch on the side of the road. The professor called out, “Pyrrho, my good lad, would you kindly come hither and assist me out of this ditch? I am unfortunately unable to move.” Pyrrho was quite found of this man, as he was the professor who had taught Pyrrho the philosophy he valued so highly. Pyrrho thought for a moment, yet he could not conclusively decide that it would be better to help the professor out of the ditch, rather than leave him there. Pyrrho walked on, leaving the man helpless. Later that day, a couple other philosophy students came upon their poor professor. Of course, the young men helped him out immediately, wasting no time to even consider any other course of action. Many people thought Pyrrho despicable for his callousness; however, the professor was quite pleased. He praised Pyrrho’s consistency.
Pyrrho is the founder of Pyrrhonism, which in philosophical circles today has become much better known as Skepticism. So, what is the value of Pyrronhism? Should we suspend judgement for the simple reason that it may not be the perfect choice? If so, to what extent?

Undoubtedly, a little skepticism is healthy, and would do a lot to increase the intellectual awareness of the mindless masses of the world. But the question of total skepticism is a difficult one. I am a strong believer in absolutes, rather than arbitrary selection, so how does one determine a situation for skepticism? The first, and most absolute options of all would be to be skeptical about everything or be skeptical about nothing. The latter seems at cross-purposes with philosophy itself, and would clearly lead to countless false conclusions, so I will (perhaps unfairly) discard it. As to the former, here we encounter the "pyrrhonist" viewpoint. To be skeptical about everything, to only act when one is sure, would appear the ultimate goal for an omniscient philosopher, a perfect being. Yet philosophers who have attempted this feat (and there have been a few) have revealed a number of problems with this approach. Perhaps the most notable of them all was Descartes, who tried, at least philosophically, to accept only what he could prove beyond doubt. Descartes, though he dedicated much of his life to this goal, did not get very far. Ultimately, he concluded that the only things that were true were that: I exist (I think therefore I am), God exists (though as a metaphysical event, rather than in the religious sense), and that the principles of mathematics hold. Even the veracity of these can, and has been, hotly debated. Is it worth to seek such absolute truth when the results are so discouraging? Of course the example of Pyrrho goes even further than this. If skepticism leads to so difficulties in the philosophical world, can it possibly be followed as an example in the the REAL world, used practically in daily life, as pyrrho attempts? One must certainly admit that it appears hypocritical to claim to seek only truth yet practice it not, and Pyrrho cannot be held guilty for that.
Ultimately, my solution, though perhaps by no means undisputable, is this: For one seeking the ultimate truth, without fail, total skepticism is the only sure path. Yet since even the most basic of proofs requires SOME assumption, as those familiar with the workings of mathematical logic know (one must always begin with some axioms which are unproven), this goal is likely impossible. Therefore, like math, to maximize one's results while maintaining philosophical integrity, one should assume only what one has to, what has been supported by such an avalanche of empirical evidence without exception or counterexample that it can be viewed as undeniable. In math, these basic axioms and postulates are often as simple as "1+1=2" or "either A is true or not A is true". It is via these assumptions that we build the foundations of science, for things such as the law of gravity or relativity cannot be proven, merely supported indefinitely. This takes care of the philosophical aspect, leaving still the practical application to Pyrrho's situation. It is quite possible that Pyrrho did not see sufficient reason even with my wider boundary for what can be accepted. However, I do not feel that this requires further limitations on skepticism. Pyrrho is right in questioning whether or not it is better to help his professor. His mistake, in my view, is that he decides that "I am not sure what to do, therefore I will not do anything". What he fails to consider is that while he may not know that "It is better to help my professor", neither does he know "It is better not to help my professor". As I have maintained elsewhere, INaction is a choice in itself. In this situation, where one is not deductively sure of the correct course, one must use the ultimate tool of practicality. One should weigh every piece of empirical evidence available and make a decision. This would include past experiences, probabilities and consequences, even the examples of others. This method, of course, is far from foolproof, and leads to assumptions often in favor of societal norms, something I view with great reluctance, but it cannot be done any other way. Since this decision is by no means absolute, the philosopher must be aware of its possible incorrectness, and seek to discover the truth of the matter, during which he may find that his course was mistaken. However, the empirical weighing of evidence, in the absence of more sure ways of verification, is generally fairly reliable. Had he weighed the evidence in this manner, Pyrrho would likely have decided that, at least for his own reputation, it would be best to help the professor. Later, of course, he could analyze the problem more closely and determine whether or not such a course of action was justified, but at least for the time being, the philosopher as well as the practical man must choose "the best possible answer" with the evidence in their possession, even if it is not enough to make a perfect case.
Personally I think that this prryho guys is nuts...you just have to go with what you think is best even if u dont know for sure, or else how would anything get done?
