the end of the world and other newtonian discoveries

I offer this brief and humorous tidbit to tide over you guys until we busy students are able to prepare something more substantial. Hail, friends, hail Sir Isaac Newton!

While still a baby boy, before the ripe age of 25, Newton had already mastered the art of falling apples and discovered calculus. The philosopher-astronomer-physicist-and-then-some went on to set the foundation for classical mechanics. He established revolutionary laws of motion. And this is only the beginning of his list of accomplishments! However, I find one very mysterious discovery of his even more awesome than the rest.

After breaking nearly all scientific barriers possible, Newton made his most amazing proclamation! According to Newton, in 2060 the sky will fall! Yes you heard it here first, the world is going to end in the year 2060, so make sure to conquer your fears and climb your mountains before then.

This strange prediction from Newton represents a very different side of this genius that most of us have probably not seen before. Perhaps Newton was not the cold logic-driven machine that he is often made out to be. A passionate irrational man was hidden underneath his calculating exterior. What is more, it is always entertaining to poke fun at the most intelligent among us humans whenever possible.

hmm...sounds kind of like Chicken Little to me.

hehe =)

Probably because I was making fun of Newton by comparing him with Chicken Little's "the sky is falling" claims.

A bit strange for us to be able to compare Sir Isaac with a crazy character from a children's story. That is what is so fascinating and humorous about this particular Newtonian "discovery."

I don't remember whether or not Chicken Little had time to invent any new mathematical schemas though. Anyone know?

Maybe his imagination is what made him so genius, and he just hid it beneath logical facts. It's imagination that causes us to ask questions, isn't it?

Lol, i think if I was a super genius like him i might say something crazy just to get a kick out of everyone's reaction to it. Although i wouldn't say anything to serious to freak people out.

Perhaps we should wait and see, I don't think it will be the sky that falls but we're not in 2060 yet.

I just hope there is someone around in 200 years that is able to laugh at out theories :>)

Keep free thinking guys, don't work too hard.

I have bookmarked your blog and hope to be able to fly by again.

Isn't it interesting how Newton's laws only work at slow speeds, and that his equations have been deemed inferior when compared to Einstein's Relativity and it's accurate calculations with planets orbital patterns and time dialation?

If you think about it though, a guy with that supreme "intelegence" for that time had a lot of stress. He wanted to search for answers to questions others couldn't find. We all have this desire to know the unkown, and maybe this is his way of covering up his own desire.

*Sorry, I didn't see the whole post before haha.

Heh, no problem.

Newton was VERY stressed out over publishing his work. One thing he could not handle was criticism of his work. He had incredibly long and heated debates with Leibniz over who invented calculus where they did nothing but critique each other publicly. This must have been hell for Newton. I think that he vowed several times not to publish work ever again after having been critiqued, not sure if he stuck by this claim for long though.

Among other things, the Stewart dynasty was known for it's radical and extreme piety. Newton was knighted by Queen Anne of the Stewarts, who had a strong Prtestant upbringing. Perhaps such stresses and pressures also came from royalty, who may have requested such a date.

*funeral music sounds* We have gathered here today to morn the loss of Freecognition, it seems as though suddenly this site lost it's life force and has yet to redeem itself by a fresh post.

Much like how we observe Einstein's different 'sides' to his persona. Some of the greatest thinkers out there seem to have a duality in them, you agree?

wrestlingstud135 said...

I don't think it's as much a duality as we may think. We glorify historical figures often beyond what they really were. If you would look at a person living today and remember them by a few works, than find something out of the ordinary it would seem so alien to them. Yet, in the present it's who they are.

It's impossible to prove the sky won't fall in 2060, but Newton had to have some kind of justification that the sky is going to fall, if he hadn't been joking.

Isn't 2060 that about the time of Kurzweil's Great Singularity? Perhaps Isaac & Ray did tea together.
